2. Suspiria
Suspiria is a red-light-daubed creep fest with the spookiest music since The Exorcist's tubular bells. The film follows an American dance student who joins a German dance academy. Unfortunately for her, it used to be a dance/occult studies academy (I've always thought the two went together well), and so run by a coven of witches. Suspiria is a surprisingly bloody affair (once you get over the fact that it looks like Heinz tomato soup), and some of the deaths are Saw-worthy in both their originality and grisliness. Despite being a straight-up horror film, Suspiria allows for a certain amount of affected witchiness to seep through. Whether it's the Miss Trunchbull-esque German dance instructor, or the final showdown, this film styles out some of the more gruesome horror to give it a careful balance. One thing it did teach me, though: always check your hair brush before brushing your hair.
