10. The Worst Witch
The Worst Witch, as a whole, is not terribly spooky in the strictest sense of the word. It was a 1986 TV film that, despite a questionable script and hilarious production values (by today's standards at least), managed to attract a truly stellar cast and has now earned its place as something of a cult classic. We follow the eponymous worst witch, Mildred Hubble, and Cackle Academy's preparations for Hallowe'en where the Grand Wizard will visit the school to watch their broomstick formation. The Grand Wizard's visit is the source of much excitement, probably due to the fact that the Grand Wizard is Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show) so you can understand their anticipation. However, Tim Curry and his fabulous (there is no other word for it) cloak are not the main event in The Worst Witch: the hard-nosed and frighteningly strict Miss Hardbroom is played by none other than Dame Diana Rigg, you see. You may know her as the sharp-tongued Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones, or feminist heroine Emma Peel from The Avengers. Either way, there is no denying her sheer acting power and prowess. Diana Rigg gives a performance of a lifetime, and manages to be both outrageously funny and absolutely terrifying - often in the same scene.
