10 Stephen King Movie Adaptations That Deserve A Remake

5. Maximum Overdrive

The Running Man
De Laurentiis Entertainment Group

Maximum Overdrive tells a story about a small rural town which comes under siege when mechanical machines take on a life of their own, following the Earth becoming trapped in the tail of a passing comet. The film stars Emilio Estevez, who was hot property in Hollywood at the time following appearances in The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire. It was the first and last time King would direct an adaptation of his works.

Looking back, Maximum Overdrive is without a doubt a product of its time - a mid-eighties B-Movie style sci-fi/monster flick created by an inexperienced director, and placed within the minimalist of settings, as the survivors of the mechanical uprising hole up in a Truck Stop café for the majority of the run time, trapped by dozens of would be killer trucks.

This is, however, a concept that could be taken to a whole new level with a remake on a grander scale, perhaps bringing the story into a city with countless possibilities of the chaos that could be caused by modern machines, and not just an ensemble of murderous vehicles, lawnmowers and petrol pumps.
