10 Stephen King Universe Fates Worse Than Death

3. Cell

Cell movie
Clarius Entertainment

This is another film to add to the list of poor Stephen King adaptations, though nowhere as bad as, for example, The Lawnmower Man. Here, John Cusack plays an artist who survives the Pulse - a tone that is released through every active cellphone, turning anyone who hears it into a rage filled zombie.

The book is a tight and smart novel from King, truly encapsulating the hopelessness of the situation. There are more than just the damned to deal with though, as even the other survivors become enemies to battle. While this may seem very like The Walking Dead, there is a greater sense of isolation - particuarly as even the living begin to avoid them after they attack a pod of zombies.

The main push of the novel is the search for Jake's son, forever just ahead, forever out of reach. The world falls to pieces around them, but they press on. The close of the story has a flicker of hope, though the world in which they live is ruined beyond repair.

This is one of King's stronger novels of recent years, done an injustice by a sub-par film.
