Fan service has always been a big part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with each movie packed full of references and Easter Eggs that appeal to both people that have followed the movies since the very beginning, as well as those with a more extensive knowledge of comic book lore.

Introducing the X-Men will take a delicate balancing act between rebooting iconic characters that audiences have become more than familiar with over the last 20 years, while also establishing that it takes place within the MCU's established continuity without relentlessly hammering the point home.

As we'll get to later on this article, the fact that mutants are suddenly a thing now after never being mentioned before is going to be a tricky narrative minefield to navigate, and Kevin Feige and his team have to make sure that their version of the X-Men stand on their own merits rather than sending somebody like Nick Fury or Thaddeus Ross in to give the same 'I always knew you where here but I've just decided to turn up now' spiel that we've already seen countless times before.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
