7. Imperial Shipwrights Hate Their Crews

The design flaw that spells the doom of the first Death Star is so widely known to cinephiles, it's practically a meme. But the Death Star's thermal exhaust vent vulnerability isn't a particularly shocking failing as it was only two metres wide, required the Force to hit, and was put there by a renegade engineer deliberately. Imperial shipwrights aren't in the clear yet, however.

The Super Star Destroyer fielded at the Battle of Endor is the most powerful weapon the Empire has aside from the Death Star II itself. And yet it's a hopelessly flawed design. Its bridge, where all the command systems and its senior crew are stationed, isn't nestled safely within the ship's armoured hull but sticks out of the ship's upper surface.

It would be impossible to make it any more easy to attack. Once the bridge's shield is down it doesn't even need to be shot at: a damaged A-Wing fighter smashes into the bridge, wipes out its officers and sends the whole thing crashing into the Death Star.

The Empire has form for this sort of thing. The AT-AT walkers marching on Hoth have their crew in the walkers' heads, where they are both obvious and easily shot. The Empire's armed forces don't need deliberate sabotage to make their vehicles as deadly to their crews as to the enemy.
