10 Subtle Movie Jokes That Probably Went Straight Over Your Head

9. Jeff Bridges' Favourite Shirt - Cold Feet/The Fisher King/The Big Lebowski

Tristar/Working Title

Here's a movie joke that didn't start out as a movie joke at all, but slowly evolved into one across the span of - wait for it - nine years.

Jeff Bridges is one of cinema's most beloved actors, largely down to playing every single part with an unabashed sense of awesomeness (c'mon - the man was "The Dude"!). He also has complete power over his wardrobe choices, apparently, given that he's worn the same shirt - count 'em - three times.

Yes, in three entirely separate movies - Cold Feet in 1989, The Fisher King in 1991, and The Big Lebowski in 1998 - Bridges brought this shirt to the screen. Why? How? The only answer you really need is: "Jeff Bridges". Of course, the first couple of times that this happened, it wasn't particularly funny, but when you factor in the shirt's Big Lebowski appearance, you began appreciate this as a fine running joke. I wonder why it wasn't featured in True Grit?
