6. Elia Kazan's Fantastic Four
Sorcha EdwardTaking the kind of subjects that Elia Kazan was famed for broaching such as family and the working class struggle and then applying it to something like The Fantastic Four would have been a fascinating prospect. In Kazans Four it is easy to imagine Marlon Brando as a cocksure Johnny Storm clashing with Ernest Borgnine as The Thing, their conflict playing out the generational clash of two sides of American blue collar-dom. Montgomery Clift would have also been an inspired choice to play Mr Fantastic against and equally perfect Kim Novak as Sue Storm. Never one to broach the fantastical it is somewhat difficult to imagine Kazan handling the Sci-Fi elements of the story but this is where bringing in the creative trailblazers of the time such as A. Arnold Gillespie, Irving G. Ries, and Wesley C. Miller who were the Oscar nominated team behind the special effects in Forbidden Planet. A young Ray Harryhausen could work on the stop-motion animation of Galactus, the Silver Surfer and long-shots of the Thing. Rounding out the stellar cast (and providing the greatest special effect of all) would be Vincent Price as the nefarious and theatrical voice of Victor Von Doom.
