6. Rough Upbringings

If you've ever thought about becoming a superhero, you may want to say goodbye to any close family members first - because according to many superhero films, that's a sure fire way to do it.

Batman, Wolverine, and the Hulk are only a few of the countless examples of the trauma many superheroes face as children. Whether it's watching your parents get killed in front of you, being forced to kill a parent yourself, or having to watch one parent abuse another, a common motivator for superheroes is their rough upbringing.

It doesn't happen every time, but the trope has become so frequent and publicised that at this point, we're practically surprised when our hero has had a normal childhood.

However, the darkness ingrained into these back stories can make for interesting characters. We may hate that it seems to happen with nearly every hero, but we can't deny that when it's done well, the crushing history makes the character more empathetic and gives us something to root for.
