10 Superhero Movie Staples That Weren't In The Comics
4. Batman Kills People. A Lot. - Almost Every Batman Movie
One of Batman's most distinctive attributes from the comics is his famed no-kill policy, whereby he refuses to kill any criminal, even one as dangerous to society as The Joker, to ensure a discernible line is drawn between himself and the people he hunts.
Though it wouldn't be accurate to say that Batman has never killed anyone in the comics - the 1930s Detective Comics hadn't yet crystallised the rule, for instance - Batman's disdain for murder is nevertheless extremely pervasive across the thousands of comics starring the Caped Crusader.
Sadly the movies have consistently made a hash-job of conveying Batman's no-kill policy to audiences, with every single one of the live-action Batman films having the Dark Knight kill at least one person - save, ironically, for the worst one of all, Batman & Robin.
In Adam West's 1966 Batman, he vaporises a goon with a single kick (long story), is a blood-thirsty maniac in Burton's '89 Batman and kills The Joker (Jack Nicholson), slaughters The Penguin (Danny DeVito) in Batman Returns, murders Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) in Batman Forever, burns down the League of Shadows' HQ and lets Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson) die in Batman Begins, kills Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart)...again in The Dark Knight and offs Talia al Ghul (Marion Cotillard) in The Dark Knight Rises.
As for Batman v Superman? Batfleck shoots up bad guys by the dozen, brands criminals which leads to their deaths in prison, and is an all-around murderous, right-wing monster far from his traditional comic book conception.
It's a common enough trope in Batman's movies that it feels like a wildly misguided signature at this point, a staple (mostly) absent from the comics, and one nobody really wanted.
