10 Superhero Movie Staples That Weren't In The Comics

3. The Total Absence Of Mutants - The MCU

Until the recent completion of the Disney-Fox merger, Fox owned the exclusive rights to Marvel's X-Men characters, and by extension the use of the term "mutant" in relation to any Marvel characters.

As a result, the MCU has been unable to include traditional comic book mutants of any kind, with the likes of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) having their origins altered so as to be "experiments" of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann).

It's all a bit awkward, naturally, and marks one of the MCU's biggest divergences from comic book lore - after all, it's perfectly reasonable to expect mutants to have joined the fold some 22 movies into the enterprise.

Thankfully Disney's acquisition of Fox means that the mutant moratorium is officially up, though Kevin Feige has since warned fans not to expect the X-Men in the MCU for a "long time." As such, the drought will probably continue through Phase 4 and possibly beyond.
