10 Superhero Movies That Defined Other Superhero Movies
3. Deadpool
There's an unbridled beauty in Deadpool's accomplishments that is, perhaps, more revolutionary than any other piece in its genre that came before or after it. What did it do, you ask? Well, it only went and grossed over $800 million while having an R-rating.
That very statistic means that it single-handedly dominated the box office and came admirably close to entering that coveted one billion club without the help of what many believe to be a superhero movie's core audience - Kids.
Deadpool may love his jokes but after pulling off that feat, nobody was laughing. Instead, the-powers-that-be took it as a sign that, yes, superhero movies can still sell even if their specifically tailored to an adult audience and, in the years that followed, Fox would release two more R-Rated X-Men spin-offs in Logan and Deadpool 2 - which actually went on to outgross its predecessor in worldwide takings.
Like Wonder Woman, Deadpool wasn't the first of its kind but it did become the standard-bearer for R-rated superhero movies and started a trend that will likely continue into the next decade, which might even kick off at the beginning of next year with Warner Bros.' upcoming Birds Of Prey film.
