10 Superhero Movies That Defined Other Superhero Movies

2. Wonder Woman

The unprecedented success of Wonder Woman was nothing short of groundbreaking. Released at a time when superhero movies were all headlined by male heroes, the 2017 film took the world by storm, going on to make a whopping $821 million at the box office. Not only did it save Warner Bros.' flailing DCEU, it obliterated the myth that female superheroes wouldn't sell on the big screen.

While it technically wasn't the first ever time that a female superhero starred in her own movie, it is the first female-led outing of this modern superhero era, and Warner Bros. (for all their DCEU-related faults) deserves some major credit for being the studio to finally make it happen.

Naturally, the resounding success of the film had a major impact on Hollywood and, in doing so, proved that there was a market for female-led superhero movies, ultimately paving the way for more.

Thus, it's no surprise that, in the two years that followed, Marvel Studios produced Captain Marvel - the first movie headlined by a woman in the MCU's decade-long history. Like Wonder Woman, it too achieved phenomenal success, with the studio now also setting its sights on producing a solo Black Widow movie for 2020.

Two years later, and Wonder Woman is still influencing hearts and minds, so it's only fitting that she return to the big screen to do it all again in next year's Wonder Woman 1984.
