6. For All Seasons
Written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Tim Sale, Superman: For All Seasons tells four stories which chronicle Superman's early days in Smallville and Metropolis, examining who he is mostly through the eyes of those closest to him. It explores why his character and not his powers are what should be remembered most. This book did so well it inspired the Smallville television series to be made, also created and produced by Jeph Loeb for most of its run. Each chapter is very well written, but the standout chapter for me is the very first one, from Jonathon Kent's point of view. Jonathon is a very underrated character and the relationship between him and his son is one of the best things in the Superman mythology. I'm always upset whenever a new take on Superman, like Man of Steel or The New 52 for instance, decides to kill him while Clark is still a teenager or young adult because there is a lot to be mined from that relationship when he becomes the famous superhero. For All Seasons is a very heart-warming tale which shows how Superman lives up to the Kent name and his affect on other people.
