10 Surprisingly Violent Deaths In Family Friendly Movies
5. The Ritual Victim (Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom)
Current BBFC Rating: 12 (PG in cinemas).
Cause of Death: Heart ripped out, dunked inside a fiery pit of hell.
Indiana Jones is the poster boy for easy-to-watch action adventures, and 99 percent of the franchise is just that. That one percent, though? It's pretty disturbing.
One of the franchise's darkest moments comes during the first sequel, Temple of Doom, when Indy, along with Willy and Short Round, stumble upon a cult performing a sacrificial ceremony.
The ceremony in question involves a poor victim having his heart ripped out (we're shown Mola Ram's hand entering the man's chest in clear view of the camera, and the beating sound effect makes it feel all too real), before being lowered into a fire pit, his cries and pleas going unheard as he descends to meets his maker.
We even see the poor guy catch fire as he begins burning to death, as his bloody heart, still pulsating in Mola Ram's hand, does the same.
The emotionally-scarring effects of imagining someone plunging their hand into your body and tearing your heart out notwithstanding, it's hard to watch a man be sent to die like he's nothing, especially when the onlookers are chanting with glee. Childhood ruined!
