10 Swedish Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die

2. Koko-di Koko-da (2019)

Wither 2012
Smorgasbord Picture House

Perhaps the strangest selection on this list, the dark fantasy and psychological horror of Koko-di Koko-da has been understandably likened elsewhere to The Babadook, Antichrist, The Evil Dead, Funny Games, and – oddly enough – 1993’s Groundhog Day. It’d also be fair to call it a mix of Alice in Wonderland and Eden Lake (with a bit of Gozu thrown in).

After suffering the death of their daughter, a couple goes on a camping trip to repair their marriage and clear their minds. Unfortunately, they encounter a trio of playfully perverse sideshow personalities who taunt them with an array of anguish, slapstick, and even some time-bending disorientation.

Currently, the movie holds an approval rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics from The Daily Beast, Paste Magazine, and the New York Times – among many other publications – praising its blend of carnivalistic cruelty and fundamental lessons about overcoming sorrow and appreciating internal and external kindness.

Oh, and the titular nursery rhyme is sinisterly silly, swiftly becoming an unavoidable earworm (so just be prepared for that).
