You sort of have to admire the cojones on 20th Century Fox and the writers of Independence Day: Resurgence, because while it's absolute trash (sometimes enjoyably so, though), it sets up an epic follow-up to end the ID trilogy.
In the final moments, Jeff Goldblum's David Levinson reveals a plan to take the fight to the alien homeworld in a last alliance of survivors, aided by the Apple sphere alien thing they meet partway through the film. Don't think about it too much. From there, it all looks like we'll be heading out to space for the threequel.
It hasn't yet been officially cancelled, even with the Disney merger deal and producer Dean Devlin openly stating he doesn't know if he wants to make a new one in March 2018. But there's just no way. The sequel grossed just $389.7 million worldwide and that's surely not the kind of return Disney will be looking at when they're considering viable brands.
