If Disney's confidently released schedule, Avatar and Stars Wars movies will dominate the festival release windows right up until 2025 at least. Thye might not have chosen that approach themselves, in all honesty, but their purchase of Fox AFTER James Cameron had outlined his grand plan for four sequels tied their hands. Plus, this IS still the highest earning movie of all time and the more they can squeeze out of it the better.

Right now, the plan is to make all four sequels and for a good while, Cameron was talking as though they were all one big unified project split into chapters. But then after Disney finallised the deal, the director seems to have changed his tune somewhat, acknowledging that "if Avatar 2 and 3 don't make enough money, there's not going to be a 4 and 5."

As they're actually fully formed films, cutting them off before the end with 5 would be easier than if they were 4 parts of one movie. And there is just no way both of the Avatars that are cemented as certain can perform as well as the original. The conversation has simply moved on from those days and if Disney don't see a similar trend as with Avatar at the box office, it;ll be branded a failure and cut off early,
