10 Terrible Characters In Otherwise Awesome Movies

7. Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) - Pacific Rim

Once again, Guillermo del Toro brings us a supporting character who, in his head, might be hilarious, but for the rest of us is nothing but an irritation. Teamed up with Charlie Day's Newton Geiszler (who isn't necessarily the most endearing character either), Gottlieb's primary role in the futuristic monsters-versus-aliens tale is scientific exposition. However, it was deemed a good idea for him to convey this exposition in a ridiculously theatrical posh English accent whilst hobbling around exaggeratedly on a walking stick.

It's understandable that a little comic relief might have been deemed necessary in the otherwise largely straight-faced sci-fi epic - but was this really the best they could do? Gorman's excessively plummy mannerisms are suggestive of a man twice his age, playing up rather outmoded ideas about what the English are like (not to suggest the film is aiming for realism on any level).

Pacific Rim can be frustrating at times, considering how little of its two hours and twelve minutes are given to the spectacular Kaiju/Jaeger punch-ups we all came to see; but when a good chunk of that time is taken up by irksome incidental characters like Gottlieb, it sours the experience that bit more.
