5. Days And Nights (2014) - Ben Whishaw
Rotten Tomatoes: 0% The Plot: A movie star brings her paramour to her New England lakeside retreat over Memorial Day weekend so that he can meet her family, but dysfunction soon turns to disaster. As the family patriarch reveals that his health is failing him, old wounds are opened and need to be healed in 92 minutes or less. Why It Sucks: Writer/director Christian Camargos debut outing is inspired by Anton Chekovs play The Seagull, which, now considered a classic, was panned after its St. Petersburg premier in 1896. It wasnt until later productions of the show were arranged that it got the recognition it deserved, though I cant see the same thing happening with Days And Nights. Camargos relationship with the source material is a confusing one, with his film seemingly adapted from it in one scene and merely loosely inspired by it in the next. Its not easy to invest in the story when everyone in it seems to be getting followed around by a rain cloud and speaks as though they are actually on a stage, and Wishaw, I'm sorry to say, is one of the worst culprits. Its sombre, its dull, and it was never going to get away with being both. Deserved of it's rating, I'm afraid.
