10 "Terrible" Movie Sequels That Are Actually Good
1. Batman Forever
Batman Forever often ends up on the wrong end of fan criticism moreso because of what it stood for rather than what actually it was. What I mean by that is that many fans tend to resent it because it signified the franchise's infamous swerve in a light-hearted direction that ultimately paved the way for the even more infamous Batman & Robin. And yet to do that would completely rob a great film of the credit it deserves.
Was it as good as either of the two Tim Burton movies that Warner Bros. shied away from? Absolutely not, but there is more than enough in there to warrant some credit and, at the very least, the two hours of your time that a first watch would take.
Sure, it's dressed up in neon lights, but at heart, there's a strong character-driven narrative centering on Bruce's struggles with the duality of his identity - one that Val Kilmer handles incredibly well. And the additions of Jim Carrey's colourful Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones' animated Two-Face prevent things from every getting too gloomy (though the neon lights do plenty of that too).
Batman Forever is not Batman & Robin, and the sooner we all acknowledge that, the sooner we can accept it for the entertaining thrill-ride that it is.
