10 Terrible Movies By Great Directors
4. The Weight Of Water - Kathryn Bigelow
Kathryn Bigelow is responsible for a number of iconic films, a few of them being Point Break, The Hurt Locker, and Zero Dark Thirty. Those movies reveal the best of what Bigelow has to offer, but The Weight of Water unfortunately exposes some of her weaknesses.
One of the greatest shortcomings of the movie is the poor story structure, which bounces back and forth between two key storylines. One is of murders taking place in the 19th century, and another is of a present-day newspaper employee doing research on those murders.
Bigelow does a poor job of convincing viewers that either story is worth investing in emotionally. The way the film jumps back and forth between timelines is more distracting than it is interesting or informing. Bigelow didn't use her talents to her advantage in The Weight of Water, and the project probably would have benefitted from having a different director. The style Bigelow normally uses was not compatible with this film's story, and that's what led to it being such a let-down.
