10 Terrible Movies By Great Directors

5. Cosmopolis - David Cronenberg

David Cronenberg is one of the most interesting directors to ever grace the profession. He's a master at creating tension and causing a deep sense of discomfort in his audience. Shivers and The Fly are undeniably unsettling pieces of cinema, and A History of Violence and Eastern Promises are remarkably well crafted films. Compared to those career-defining movies, Cosmopolis is a massive letdown and a stain on an otherwise fantastic filmography.

Cosmopolis is centered on a young billionaire, played by Robert Pattinson, whose world crumbles around him as he loses money and discovers a few unnerving truths about reality. The conversations he has with others are superficial and empty, and everyone speaks in monotone voices.

There's nothing to emotionally engage with in the film, and it feels completely soulless. That may be the point that Cronenberg is trying to make about the 1% in society, but it's a point that is poorly made. Cosmopolis might be a film that Cronenberg wishes we would forget, but unfortunately it is unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.
