10 Terrible Movies That Cost Way More Than They Needed To
1. Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $410.6m
Somewhat surprisingly, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the most expensive movie ever made. Before tax incentives, the production costs of the fourth entry in the franchise came to a frankly absurd $410.6m. That's more than the annual GDP of over 100 countries worldwide. For a sh*tty pirate flick!
As well as the expenses of building massive sets and creating thousands of visual effects shots, Johnny Depp was paid a whopping $55.5m to reprise his signature role as Captain Jack Sparrow to deliver the same old shtick and definitively prove that the character was in real danger of overstaying his welcome.
Shorter than the overstuffed Dead Man's Chest and At World's End but also somehow worse, On Stranger Tides made the grave mistake of allocating far too much screentime to the increasingly-irritating Captain Jack, which is probably due to the script making it impossible to care about any of the other characters, with wasting of Ian McShane as Blackbeard in a spot of genius casting particularly unforgivable.
Still, it's hard to imagine Disney losing much sleep over the quality of the final product when On Stranger Tides sailed to over a billion dollars at the box office, further reinforcing that the strength of the brand is far more important than how good the actual movie itself is.
