10 Terrible Plot Twists From Otherwise Awesome Movies

9. Star Trek Into Darkness - John Harrison Is Khan

Though it's been divisive over the years, Star Trek Into Darkness has a lot going for it. With its heavy emphasis on action, perhaps it isn't a particularly good Star Trek movie, but taken on its own terms, Into Darkness is a hugely enjoyable and well-directed sci-fi action blockbuster with a delightful cast and many badass action scenes.

Still, whatever one's opinion of the film is, the central twist is difficult to defend.

Star Trek fans worked out that the character referred to as John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) was a new version of iconic Star Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh early on, but J.J. Abrams being J.J. Abrams, he insisted on a mystery box approach. When Harrison was revealed as Khan, it only provoked groans. Given how obvious this was, why make it a twist at all?

There was also a lot about the character that didn't make sense, such as his decision to store his cryogenically frozen allies in torpedoes (not exactly an ideal way to keep them safe!), and the film's secondary villain Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) reviving Khan (who's a genetically-engineered superhuman who's been in cryo-sleep for 300 years) to build new weapons and fight a war against the Klingons. How would a man from 300 years ago help with building modern weapons?
