10 Terrible Plot Twists From Otherwise Awesome Movies

8. Scream VI - Wayne Did It

Scream VI is a simply delightful slasher sequel. Gnarly, hysterically funny, gloriously meta, and wonderfully acted, it's an absolute blast and easily the best Scream movie since the second one. There is, nevertheless, one substantial problem: most viewers will call the identity of the killer before it's revealed.

Detective Wayne Bailey (Dermot Mulroney) gives himself away to the audience a while before he actually reveals himself as the movie's villain. Firstly, the new Ghostface is leaving behind masks at the crime scenes, and realistically, only a law enforcement officer would have access to those.

Secondly, he mentions that he lost his son but doesn't elaborate, thus hinting at his motivation - he's the father of Richie (Jack Quaid), the killer in Scream V. Finally, when his daughter Quinn 'dies', her death is off-screen and her 'corpse' isn't seen clearly, so that gave away a fake-out death. And again, if he was a cop, he'd easily be able to get into the crime scene and help Quinn get away before anyone else arrived.

However, there are some mitigating factors here. For example, the reveal of a third Ghostface - Ethan, played by Jack Champion, who is revealed to be Wayne's son - was a surprise, and Wayne is a good antagonist in most other ways. Still, in a franchise filled with fantastic killer reveals, this was disappointingly predictable.
