1. The Sanitised Ending - Speak No Evil

Alien Romulus

The recent English-language remake of Danish-Dutch hit horror film Speak No Evil is for the most part an exceedingly well-executed retread that benefits enormously from the efforts of its central cast, especially a deliciously unhinged James McAvoy.

It's just a shame that this remake couldn't commit to the courage of its inspiration's convictions, because as predictably as the sun rising in the east, a Hollywood re-do of a controversial international horror hit ended up changing the original's bleak ending.

Rather than conclude as the original does, with the serial killer couple, Paddy (McAvoy) and Ciara (Aisling Franciosi), killing their guests Louise (Mackenzie Davis) and Ben (Scoot McNairy) and taking their daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler) for their own, the remake goes in a more cowardly, "crowd-pleasing" direction.

The third act deviates significantly, with Louise and Ben making a frantic last stand against their captors, leading to Ciara falling off the roof of her house to her death, before Paddy's kidnap victim and faux-son, Ant (Dan Hough), beats him to death with a brick.

Despite the still-visceral impact of this ending, it pales considerably compared to the bleaker finale of the original, doing the most predictable thing that any Hollywood remake of a grim stateside horror hit possibly could.
