10 Terrifying Horror Films You’ve Probably Never Seen
5. The Witch (2015)
The Witch feels like debuting feature film director Robert Eggers wanted to combine the terrifying setting of The Blair Witch Project, the paranoia of The Thing and the unsettling presence of evil from The Omen. Throw in some creepy kids and you’ve got yourself a cult classic for years to come.
Anya Taylor-Joy, who audiences may know as Michael’s deceitful wife Gina in Peaky Blinders, wonderfully plays the black sheep of the family who becomes ensnared in a slow-burning plot of evil and derangement. Meanwhile, Game of Thrones alumni and gravelly voice enthusiast Ralph Ineson knocks it out of the park as the strapping patriarch trying to keep his family together as petrifying events unfold.
Whilst on its own, the film’s Puritan setting makes it a disquieting period piece, the choice to have the actors speak in archaic English makes the experience more alien for contemporary audiences and thus, builds a far creepier atmopshere. For those patient enough to do a little translation, The Witch gives a bounty of rewards with a refreshed take that breathes maleficent life into the Witch genre.
