10 Terrifying Horror Films You’ve Probably Never Seen
4. Brightburn (2019)
What if Superman became evil before he hit puberty? Well last year the Gunn family gave grateful horror fanatics a terrifying answer to this nightmarish scenario with the release of Brightburn. Brightburn stars Elisabeth Banks and David Denman in the Ma and Pa Kent roles as conflicted parents raising an alien baby with supernatural abilities (we’ve all been there right?). Meanwhile, Jackson A. Dunn puts the “AAAAA!” in alien with an eerier performance that falls further and further from humanity in every scene.
Brightburn offers its audience a smorgasbord of themes and genres. Whilst primarily being a rare superhero horror akin to the likes of Chronicle, the film is also a slow burning supernatural thriller, as well as partially a coming-of-age drama, where the sinister superboy tries to handle growing up and puberty.
The plot is portrayed as a lit fuse of dynamite, with Dunn going from anger to rage in seconds as he devolves from adorable pre-teen to monstrous pre-teen (although I suppose all teenagers are monstrous). A particularly bleak ending will leave those who hate the hero overcoming the odds in horror feeling satisfied, whilst a well-acted, menacing ninety minutes will leave the rest on the edge of their seat with the covers over their eyes.
