10 Terrifying Horror Monsters That Only Need A Second To Scar You
2. The Marauder -- Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Evil Dead Rise did exactly what it was supposed to: it brought the franchise back for another instalment that speaks to the tastes of the current generation, reigniting everyone’s passion in the property. Director Lee Cronin takes us to the city, where guitar tech Beth (Lily Sullivan) visits her single-mum sister, Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), and her kids, Danny, Bridget and Kassie (Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher), and gets caught in the family drama. But these tensions are quickly superseded by the invitation of the titular evil dead into the apartment, where possession has the family hacking chunks out of each other until they’re down to just Beth and Kassie.
Each new entry in the franchise seeks to play with its predecessors while delivering a new experience: Evil Dead II expanded the story with interdimensional portals; Army of Darkness gave us a medieval army of Deadites; Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead ushered in the Abomination. So, of course, Rise couldn’t help but give us something we’d never seen before – although we wish it had stayed that way.
Ellie, Bridget and Danny corpses emerge in the film’s final scene as a many-headed, many-limbed beast, transformed by evil spirits into the bloody, fleshy Marauder – a creature worthy of the franchise’s forefather HP Lovecraft. And we don’t know what’s worse: the look of the monster itself, the fact that Beth and Kassie must kill it, or the way it dies: wood chippers have never looked so horrifying.
