Based on Florence Engel Randall's novel of the same name, the Disney-produced horror follows a family who move into a country home, unaware of its ominous history.

Being PG-rated, it's no surprise the violence and gore are virtually non-existent. And yet, there's always an overwhelming sense of foreboding, due to the masterful editing, eerie soundtrack, and solid acting, especially from Oscar-winning powerhouse, Bette Davis.

Shortly after arriving in the house, Jan panics when she gazes into the mirror, only to see she has no reflection. It's a simple special effect, but it's pretty skin-crawling. Having a creative scare like this early on also demonstrates how The Watcher in the Woods relies on solid filmmaking and subtle visuals rather than gratuitous kills.

Despite the lack of on-screen deaths, the film is utterly captivating, especially after Janice discovers a girl who went missing in the house long ago. As she gets closer and closer to learning the truth behind the child's disappearance, it's impossible not to be invested.

Sure, there's nothing gruesome in the story, but there doesn't need to be. The Watcher in the Woods is an absolute blast from start to finish.
