10 Terrifying Japanese Horror Movies You've Probably Never Seen

Every horror fan loves a good anthology movie. Seeing a collection of different short stories instead of one long-form narrative is incredibly fun, giving filmmakers the chance to dabble in a bunch of different sub-genres at once. Japan has had their slice of the cake too, and this is one of the most frightening.

Zoo approaches anthology horror differently than other titles, as it allows the links between the stories to centre on emotion rather than anything else. There is a running theme of pain and sadness that is evident in each segment, but each one explores it uniquely, making it a two-hour-long flick with multiple interpretations of suffering.

One short gives you a physically painful story, which sees a mother of twins adore one but despise the other. Soon the unfortunate twin tries to escape, and chaos ensues. The mother's cold and brutal abuse of the unlucky twin is thoroughly nerve-racking, and the physical punishments make the short painfully visceral.

To contrast this, the last segment opts to give you a metaphorical and highly interpretable CG animated story about a man surviving a post-apocalypse, learning about life and death. It switches up the tone and even the medium but still retains a sense of suffering that matches the previously mentioned segment.

Each story has a similar approach, taking the concepts of fear, pain and sadness, and bringing them to life in completely different ways.
