10 Terrifying Japanese Horror Movies You've Probably Never Seen
3. Creepy
Watching Creepy feels akin to hearing forks scraping across plate, it's that uncomfortable and painful at times. This film's simplistic title doesn't do justice to the twists and turns that it will take you on, but does capture the movie's vibe perfectly.
Creepy's narrative follows the Takakura family as they move to a new home. Koichi and his wife Yasuko try to adjust to this new life, with Koichi - a former detective - getting involved with a cold-case and Yasuko attempting to forge a good relationship with their neighbours, only to grow increasingly suspicious of the eccentric and seemingly dangerous Nishino. From there, the narrative becomes an intense thrill-ride of twists and paranoia.
This atmosphere is accomplished thanks to the acting, as each performance is so believable that the characters seem real. This is most evident in Teruyuki Kagawa's performance as the titular creepy neighbour. He captures the character's unsettling nature but extends some friendliness that makes him feel like a wolf in sheep's clothing. His progression from slightly uncomfortable to downright evil is difficult to watch and makes you constantly afraid for the Takakura family.
Domestic horror is a genre that never fails to make viewers nervous, and this movie takes full advantage of the set up, by gradually making the scenario more intense, and forcing you to question what secrets your neighbours could be hiding.
