10 Terrifying Japanese Horror Movies You've Probably Never Seen
2. Horrors Of Malformed Men
Horrors of Malformed Men is not your average movie, in fact, even the most eccentric of filmmakers would consider it a wild ride.
This film is a compelling and strange tale that's widely considered a precursor to the Toei Company's "Pinky Violent" films of the 1970s - those being overly sexed-up movies full of violence and exploitation. From such a description, you can imagine what awaits you with this flick.
The narrative follows a young medical student named Hirosuke who escapes from an insane asylum, with no recollection of why he was there, or who he really is. He then assumes the identity of a deceased man who appears to be his doppelganger and ends up on a strange island populated by a mad scientist and his mutated creations.
It's an incredibly visually-striking flick, which starts out feeling very clinical thanks to the insane asylum setting, but shifts completely after you land on the island. The movie is incredibly theatrical, as the acting, visuals and narrative become completely over-the-top. This is most evident in the "malformed men" themselves, who are gruesomely brought to life, all bearing creatively misshapen bodies and personalities that make them seem barely human.
While it doesn't hold up incredibly well - having been made in 1969 - it's still an experience that you don't want to miss out on.
