10 Terrifying Movie Apocalypses We Should All Embrace

6. Solar Flare - Knowing

Knowing Though not a particularly well-known means of mass destruction, a solar flare is without doubt an appealing one. The gist of one of these is basically the sun burping so loud that it generates enough energy to knock out various communications here on Earth. Picture Barney off The Simpsons necking five beers one after the other and extravagantly belching, then multiply that by infinity. Powerful stuff. This is the basis of hauntingly-fun disaster dirge, Knowing, starring everyone€™s favourite human meme-generator, Nicolas Cage. In this particular story, the solar flare that€™s headed our way is so unapologetically massive that it€™s threatening to burn alive every little human being on the planet including our mad-faced hero, Nic; as well as every other living thing as well. And while being scorched to death isn€™t something you€™d ordinarily add to the top of your daily to-do list, there€™s something alarmingly cosy about you spontaneously combusting in front of your family as the flare blasts across the planet. In the meantime, this chipper little film chugs along with all sorts of fantastical subplots about ghostly aliens coming down to save a select few in order for human beings to survive on another world, including Cage€™s on-screen son. To be fair though, if these otherworldly beings had viewed the rest of Nicolas Cage€™s film career to date, you suspect they wouldn€™t be in too much of a hurry to save his offspring.
