10 Terrifying Movie Apocalypses We Should All Embrace
5. Machines Becoming Self-Aware - Terminator Series
This has basically already happened without us realising. All the machines we unconsciously interact with every day are slowly but surely dictating the lives we lead, tell us what to do and how to do it, and are gently forcing us to rely on them more than ever. The only upside of this is that theyre not quite at the stage where, if we refuse, they mercilessly terminate us. But this is coming. And you should all be prepared for it. One day, AI is going to reach a point where it wakes up one morning fully aware of its existence, it will immediately recognise its power while simultaneously acknowledging that the fundamental problem with Planet Earth is those irritating human beings and their stupid haircuts. The epitome of this future utopia is of course the Terminator films; Skynet becomes self-aware, swats dead three billion homo-sapiens and takes over before the dust settles and we end up fighting loads of metallic skeletons with insane grins on their faces. And while a war with the machines might sound far more interesting than the life you have that basically consists of you picking up your iPhone every couple of minutes, ultimately the cloyingly repetitive phrases about going with someone if you want to live or being back will make you want to completely abandon the machine war altogether. And this is in no way an indirect reference to the quality of any post-T2 Terminator movie either
Chris James Peet says hello. His interests include hoping for the best and sitting in chairs. He much prefers moaning to counting his blessings and suffers fools gladly. He also likes to look out of the window and check what's in the fridge but he hates standing up, dripping taps and reality.
