4. Cast Away
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyOu9xCNMK0 The first of two of Robert Zemeckis films to be featured in this list, Cast Away is especially frightening because the crash doesn't begin against land, but instead water. I'm sure given the option, most people would prefer the quick, probably painless demise of crashing head-on into the ground, rather than the potentially prolonged agony of drowning inside a tin can. Nevertheless, Tom Hanks' Chuck Noland scarcely manages to escape a watery grave, brought to frighteningly authentic life by Zemeckis, particularly once Chuck is finally able to surface and observe the smouldering wreckage that surrounds him in the water. More so than most other films on this list, Cast Away also gets at the post-crash dangers that face a survivor, such as the gigantic turbine that explodes mere meters away from Chuck, one that he barely manages to evade.
