10 Terrifying Movie Plane Crashes

3. Fearless

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY_6de4Tdaw Peter Weir's extremely under-appreciated film has one of the most brilliantly unconventional plane crash sequences ever filmed, because it's clearly not filmed merely for us to marvel at a giant exploding fireball and the catastrophic loss of life, but because it has a fiercely moving, poetic quality to it. Jeff Bridges gives one of his all-time best performances in Fearless, having something of a spiritual experience aboard a plane once he realises that he is doomed to die. He calmly comforts other passengers and simply awaits the inevitable, while director Weir, instead of cutting to exterior shots of the catastrophe, sticks to intimate, harrowing imagery of the cabin tearing away into the sky as fire consumes it. The result is an extremely powerful experience, one which frames the movie and gives it context, enhancing Bridges' superb performance as a man who survives the crash and struggles to come to terms with why.
