Few sci-fi thrillers over the last decade have been as atmospheric as John Krasinski's A Quiet Place.

After the world is invaded by aliens with hypersensitive hearing called Death Angels, the survivors are forced to live in silence. And as the prologue proves, anyone who makes the slightest sound will suffer death almost immediately.

Thanks to this original premise, the snap of a twig or the closing of a door is likely to leave anyone's hair standing on end. As such, viewers would be scared of the Death Angels, even if they had a generic design.

Nevertheless, special effects supervisor Scott Farrar went all-out to make the echolocating creatures as scary as possible. Every aspect of the Death Angels' physiology, including their sleek armoured exterior, hook-like arms, serrated teeth, and disconnecting skull is creepy as hell. On top of that, the way they incessantly click to detect their prey is sure to give anyone goosebumps.

After being built up so brilliantly over A Quiet Place's first 80 minutes, the reveal of the Death Angels could've been anticlimactic. Fortunately, the tension during the final confrontation is through the roof, due to the monsters' phenomenal design.
