10 Terrifying TV Shows You Didn’t Know Existed
9. The Burning Girls (2023)
Based on CJ Tudor's book of the same name, six-part miniseries The Burning Girls sees a brilliant Samantha Morton play Jack, a vicar who moves to the quiet English hamlet of Chapel Croft with her teenage daughter to start a new life for themselves.
It doesn't take long for the pair to discover that there's something deeply wrong with this place. Alongside the hostility of some of the locals, the pair also learn that the previous vicar committed suicide after becoming obsessed with the unsolved case of two girls who disappeared in the '90s. Weirder still, an old, bloodstained exorcism kit arrives on their doorstep one morning.
However, none of Chapel Croft's secrets are as horrifying as the story of two young girls who were burned at the stake in the 16th century. It's believed that their spirits haunt the village and bring harm to anyone unfortunate enough to see them.
The foreboding atmosphere only grows as the plot continues to tug at its many threads, uncovering more sinister revelations from the town's sinister past.
While this may not be the scariest entry on this list, The Burning Girls is nevertheless a slow-burn chiller brimming with enough enticing secrets to be worth experiencing.
