10 Things Everybody Gets Wrong About 2015's Biggest Movies

4. "Straight Outta Compton Is Misogynistic Trash"

What Everyone Thinks: The commercially successful and critically acclaimed N.W.A biopic has received a measure of flak for its apparently misogynistic tendencies, illustrated by both the iconic rap group's treatment of women mostly as objects throughout the movie, and the curious omission of Dr. Dre's assault on female journalist Dee Barnes. The Truth: Though the Barnes omission is definitely suspect though less because she was female and more because it was such a widely-discussed period of Dre's life (even appearing in his and Eminem's classic song, Guilty Conscience), the group's depiction of women is simply true to life. It would be ridiculously dishonest to sanitise this aspect of their lives merely for the sake of political correctness: it would make the film feel less authentic, and just because we're seeing these young men carrying out these actions and attitudes, it doesn't mean we're supposed to like or agree with what they're saying. A little perspective is needed here.
