10 Things Harry Potter Fans Probably Didn't Know About Voldemort

2. He Created An Army Of Corpses By Murdering Muggles

In the Harry Potter universe, an Inferius is a corpse that has been reanimated by dark magic and bewitched into doing the user's bidding. They are deeply unsettling creatures, comprised of little more than bones and rotting flesh that crawl across the ground like feral beasts to devour their prey.

The magic required to raise the dead in such a way is extremely complex and so only a powerful wizard like Voldemort could understand how to use the spells to summon such a massive undead army, as he did in the First Wizarding War. Most of the corpses used were homeless Muggles, cruelly murdered by the Dark Lord, although there were also some wizards and witches among them who had been reported 'missing'.

Voldemort left one of these zombie hordes to guard the cave where he had hidden Salazar Slytherin's locket, which he had turned into a horcrux. Harry Potter was dragged under the water by the walking corpses and only saved from a watery grave by Albus Dumbledore summoning a ring of fire.

It's a very good thing that these creatures lie formly within the realsm of fiction.
