10 Things Hollywood Needs To Stop Doing (But Never Will)

5. Stop Being Overly Referential

The-Hobbit Lots of movies that have come out recently, especially in reboots and sequels, have spent almost as much time referencing other movies that either preceded or inspired them as they have trying to do something original. Star Trek, while still a very enjoyable movie, spent way too much time referencing things from the shows that could have been put to better use on something productive. The Hobbit referenced the Lord of the Rings more often then it did trying to replicate the look and feel that made the Lord of the Rings successful in the first place. Every James Bond movie, even the good ones, make all kinds of references to past entries. I know the makers of the films do this to please fans of the original product while simultaneously appealing to new audiences, but I don't think I'm alone when I say that the best way to satisfy audiences is to make a really good movie, not an average movie that references better movies a lot.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
