10 Things That Annoy You About New Star Wars That Didn't Bother Original Trilogy Fans
6. The Tertiary Villain Just Looks Cool In Their Armour And Does Nothing
With her bright chrome version of the stormtrooper armour featuring prominently in the marketing for The Force Awakens, plenty of fans had anticipated that Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma would have a significant role to play in the proceedings that followed. As it was, though, she was easily coerced into helping the heroes before being unceremoniously (and offscreen) dumped down a trash chute.
Still, maybe The Last Jedi would give the shiny badass something to do. After all, it did make a point of bringing her back rather than having her die in the destruction of Starkiller Base. Episode VIII did at least give her a bit of a fight scene with Finn. But the overwhelming response from fans was that Phasma represented a wasted opportunity, a character that was just a cool design but actually never did anything in the movie to live up to it.
But, hey, doesn't that remind of you someone too? A cool design of armour and a face permanently behind a helmet? A character that's an incidental tertiary villain to the big bad and his imperial bosses? A character that ultimately doesn't put up much of a fight before being dispatched to an ignominious end?
Yes, Phasma is entirely the new trilogy Boba Fett. And none of those aspects of Fett's largely incidental role in the bigger plot counted against the fact that fans still loved the design enough to consider him a perpetual favourite. Actually, the very fact that he didn't really do anything beyond look cool was kind of why Fett had an air of mystery that fans could interpret however they liked.
Just look at how the additional material about his backstory provided by Attack Of The Clones damaged the character's mystique and then say that you'd really like the same to be done for Phasma.
