10 Things That Annoy You About New Star Wars That Didn't Bother Original Trilogy Fans
5. Non-Force Users Can Wield Lightsabers
In The Force Awakens Finn uses Luke and Anakin's old lightsaber both to fight stormtroopers and, in the big climactic battle, to take on Kylo Ren (pretty unsuccessfully as it turns out, but points for bravery at least). Ultimately this is all just building up to Rey embracing her Force powers and taking up her destiny. However, it did have some fans wondering how Finn, a character with no apparent Force sensitivity of his own, could even use the saber at all.
That's a bit of a weird question, though, because at no point in the previous six films of the saga had there ever been any suggestion that turning on the laser sword required any particular outlay of space magic.
In fact, in The Empire Strikes Back, Han uses that very same lightsaber without a second thought to slice open a tauntaun so that he and Luke can bed down together inside the stinky llama-kangaroo. Nobody in 1980 was stumped by Han's incredible feat of Force powers, it was just a guy using a sword to cut things.
It's not implausible that the Jedi are the only habitual users of the "elegant weapon for a more civilised age" because it's essentially like bringing a knife to a gunfight and you probably have to have some extra special knife skills to pull that off. That doesn't, though, mean that nobody could ever even use a knife just because they might be better off with a gun.
