10 Things That Deserve Great Movie Adaptations

5. Outlaw Star

Live action adaptations of anime series are big business at the moment. Everything from Attack on Titan to Death Note, and even JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, are being bought to life, in Japan and in the USA.

One series which has seen little regard since it first aired, however, is the quietly brilliant Outlaw Star. First released as a manga between 1996 and 1999, and later adapted into a short-lived anime series in 1998, it tells the tale of Gene Starwind, a galactic outlaw on the hunt for a legendary outer space treasure trove.

The story is brisk and exciting, and the crew is great; from excitable cat girl Aisha Clanclan to vulnerable android Melfina. They're reminiscent of Firefly's ragtag band of misfits, something which many properties have attempted to achieve but few have actually managed. Each character is lovable in their own right, and together, they could be one of the best ensemble casts in recent years.

Like most anime series, Outlaw Star has many tangents and diversions, even with its relatively truncated run of 26 episodes. But with the right trimming, the story of Gene and his crew's hunt for the Galactic Leyline would make an entertaining and engaging sci-fi movie. Besides; spaceships fighting each other with robotic arms? Who doesn't want to see that.
