10 Things That Will Piss Fans Off About Star Wars: The Force Awakens

5. J.J. And His Bloody Mystery Box

Abrams did a TED talk once about his "Mystery Box" approach to screenwriting, which involves withholding information from the viewer to draw them into the story. The problem with this is that it can be frustrating for the audience to be intentionally kept in the dark, and the eventual payoff is almost always a letdown. Abrams should have learned his lesson after the whole Khan/Star Trek Into Darkness debacle, but he insisted on applying it to The Force Awakens too. The biggest unanswered question is Rey, who was abandoned on Jakku as a child for unknown reasons and is revealed to have powerful Force abilities. The movie ends without revealing who her parents are or why she was abandoned, leaving fans free to speculate widely until the next movie. There are hints she might be Luke€™s daughter, but this is unlikely as Han and Leia would surely have noticed that he fathered a child; not to mention that it doesn€™t make him look very heroic if he abandoned his child on a harsh desert planet. Other unanswered questions include why does Maz have Luke's lightsaber, what made Ren turn to the Dark Side and who exactly is Supreme Leader Snoke; questions that shall remain unanswered for awhile.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
