10 Things That Will Piss Fans Off About Star Wars: The Force Awakens
4. It Leans Too Heavily On Nostalgia
The thing that makes Abrams endearing is that hes a massive nerd at heart, which is reflected in everything he does. He has a bad habit of trying to emulate the work of others instead of creating his own unique style though; Super 8 was his attempt to make a Spielberg movie - right down to the daddy issues and Into Darkness played like a big budget fan film of The Wrath Of Khan. This habit has led him to basically remake A New Hope with The Force Awakens, right down to specific story beats. It starts with a droid - who has vital information for the resistance - being left on a desert planet, and a young dreamer with hidden force abilities must help deliver the droid to its destination. There's even a giant superweapon that must be disabled, with a little help from Han Solo and Chewbacca. Abrams is sticking close to the original trilogy because he knows that's what fans want to see, but he could have tried to break away from established formula a little more. There are also too many easter eggs and callbacks, which stops being cute after a while and becomes distracting instead.
