10 Things The Dark Tower Movie Should Have Done Differently
6. A More Experienced Director
Nikolaj Arcel is a brave man for taking on The Dark Tower after its long stay in development hell, especially when you consider it was his blockbuster debut.
Boldness alone, however, didn't make him cut out for such a lofty undertaking, and Sony should have chosen a more experienced director from the start.
Arcel may have earned critical acclaim for films like the Mads Mikkelsen-fronted A Royal Affair, but The Dark Tower is a radically different beast, and somebody with a track record for bringing sprawling epics to the big screen would have been a better fit.
JJ Abrams, who was attached to the project earlier in its gestation, has enough stamps on his Hollywood blockbuster loyalty card to pull it off, while Peter Jackson is a go-to guy for a project of this scale after the way he handled Lord of the Rings.
Arcel is clearly a more than capable filmmaker when helming a project that matches his skillset, but reports that Sony considered replacing him with somebody more seasoned following test screenings came as little surprise.
