10 Things The Dark Tower Movie Should Have Done Differently
3. A More Flawed Roland
Idris Elba for the part of Roland of Gilead was a shrewd bit of casting that people should stop complaining about - Clint Eastwood is at least two decades too old for it. Long in the tooth is one thing, but the guy's got tusks now.
The Luther star excels during the fire fights and brings true grit to the role, but beneath his exterior there's a faded, bright-eyed hero waiting for the right moment to surface.
For all of Elba's admirable efforts, The Dark Tower's depiction of Roland largely misses the mark, and that's in no way the actor's fault.
The Gunslinger the fans know from the books is a deeply-flawed anti-hero who's willing to sacrifice a small child or gun down an entire town's population if these things threaten to slow him down on the way to the titular tower.
Roland should have played an emotional tug of war with the audience throughout. In one moment, everyone should be rooting for him, but in the next questioning why they ever did in light of his latest borderline atrocity.
The problem, once again, harks back to the film's runtime. With only 90 minutes to play around with, the Gunslinger had to be reduced to something resembling an archetypal good guy and the Man in Black his polar opposite.
